Note: The chart above is for road salt. The numbers will be different for other de-icing chemicals, but the process will be the same. With all de-icers the performance will diminish as temperatures fall.

The Salt Institute has stated that applying brine to the pavement before snow or ice has bonded can be 10 times more effective than placing salt crystals on top of snow and ice after the precipitation has bonded to the pavement. Pre-treating is said to be labor efficient since the process can be done during normal shifts, reducing overtime required to catch up after a winter storm event starts. It gains the snow fighters time and greatly reduces the total cost of treatment. Once a snow/ice bond has formed it is dangerous to the traveling public as well as expensive and time consuming to break.

DESIGN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Sears Ecological Applications Company, the makers of Magic Minus Zero, has earned “designed for the Environment” Recognition from EPA.

They are the only roadway de-icer in the USA to be granted This designation!

EPA allows safer products to carry the Design for the Environment (DfE) label. This mark allows consumers to quickly identify and choose products that can help protect the environment and are safer for families. DfE starts with information that scientists already know about each ingredient and how it affects living things. Where that information doesn't tell the full story, EPA looks at an ingredient’s chemical structure - its components and shape - to understand how it could impact the environment and people. A Chemical’s structure can tell a lot about how the chemical will behave and what types of effects it may have when it comes in contact with people or the environment.
